Facts and Stories about Almonds and Coconut

Almonds are generally considered to be a nut but they are actually an edible seed (drupe) of the almond tree. Studies claim many health benefits including cholesterol reduction as well as almonds being packed with vitamins, minerals, protein and fiber. Almonds can be eaten many ways, on their own in a raw condition or toasted, sliced or flaked, in flour, oil, butter or as a replacement for dairy milk. Marzipan, which is used in cakes and chocolate fillings, is made from sugar, honey and ground almonds. Almonds go back to biblical times and are believed to originate from the Middle East before spreading to India, North Africa and the Mediterranean, especially Italy and Spain. They were used in bread that was served to the Pharaohs in Egypt.

The almond tree was brought to California in the 18th century by the Spanish Franciscans and the weather of the inland valleys was found to be ideal for growing. Today the Sacramento and San Joaquin areas of California’s Central Valley produce 70% of the world’s output. Almonds are exported to many countries with Germany being the biggest consumer. One of the production issues is the lack of indigenous water. Californian agriculture consumes around 80% of the state’s water, with supplies coming from other states such as Colorado, and almonds are a very thirsty crop.

The coconut grows on tall palm trees that can grow up to 60 feet in height. The nut is around 9 inches in diameter with a hard woody shell and a fibrous husk. At one end there are three round scars and next to the largest one is a soft opening that can be pierced to extract the clear fluid inside. After processing this becomes the popular coconut milk drink. By cracking the shell the white flesh can be reached that is turned into many products and some islands have this as their staple diet. It is high in fiber and minerals.

The name originates from the 16th century Spanish word coco which means head as the three indentations on the coconut resemble facial features and some Spaniards called it Monkey head. It was mentioned in “One Thousand and One Nights” and the seven voyages of Sinbad the
Sailor, where on the 5th journey he bought & sold coconuts. Many people associate palm trees with tropical islands and the relaxing experiences of relaxing on a beach drinking Pina Colada’s. Fortunately falling coconuts don’t hit many vacationers. Another memory from England are the Fairgrounds with the challenge to knock down a coconut by throwing balls to impress your partner. Like most of these show challenges it is not as easy as it looks.

My husband and I bought a Groupon for afternoon tea when we lived in Colorado, and loved the tea so much that even though we now live in Pennsylvania we order a couple bags of Snowflake at least twice a year! We share with friends and anyone who has tried it has loved it!

This is absolutely the best flavored  black tea that I have ever tasted.  It is extremely smooth with the wonderful flavors of coconut and almond. I started drinking Snowflake tea several years ago during the holidays and it was so wonderful that now I drink it all year long. If you like flavored tea, you have to try Snowflake.
