Houjicha Gold is a green tea, Bancha, that is roasted over a high heat and comes from the Shizuoka province of Japan. The resulting infusion gives a amber/brownish liquor with a savory roasted taste that is very refreshing. A little like Genmaicha but more body and more like a Formosa oolong that has been roasted. Picked between a first flush season and a second flush. This is the lowest in caffeine of all the Japanese green teas and some people drink before bedtime for its refreshing taste that cleanses the palate.

English Tealeaves sells over 125 high quality teas that are "cherry picked" from over 15 suppliers who specialize in specific types and countries. This gives us the flexibility to find the best of the best. We also blend around 8 teas ourselves that can't be obtained to our standards. For example our #1 selling tea, English Breakfast is our own blend that we created in 2002.
Our Cafe customers give feedback and we discontinue the ones that get poor ratings. We also look to improve our teas and will replace a standard tea, like say Mango, with a higher quality blend from another supplier.
The teas are selected after evaluation in these seven areas and then the scores are weighted to decide if they qualify for inclusion in our range:
• Dry leaves appearance • Dry aroma • Brewed Infusion Color • Aroma brewed • Hot taste • Iced taste • After taste
