Facts and Stories about English Toffee

English Toffee dates back to the 19th century and it is first mentioned in the Oxford Dictionary in 1825. Many believe it was around much earlier. It started with cheap sugar coming into England from the Caribbean where slave labor was used to harvest and process the crop. The candy market grew dramatically to satisfy the desires of the sweet tooth and the most popular was toffee. In England the candies are still called sweets. The word toffee is believed to have come from the early spelling of toffee which was toughy or tuffy and probably is because it was so hard to chew. Another possibility is that it came from a West Indies dark rum made with molasses called tafia. The English Toffee predominantly uses a recipe using brown sugar and/or molasses whereas the American toffee mainly uses white sugar which gives a less intense flavor and is more buttery. One of the favorite types that is manufactured by Thortons, that started in 1911, is treacle toffee. There is a National Toffee Day on January 8th.

5 of 5 One of my favorite teas! January 27, 2021

I love this tea because it's got a smooth flavor from the black tea and slightly sweet notes from the toffee bits. My favorite thing to do is to add in a bit of half and half and sugar. It makes this tea into a special treat.
The second brew on this is more muted - the toffee bits are mostly gone by then.
